Education and literature have shown that periodontal disease is a multi-factorial, chronic infection that destroys the periodontal structures and has been shown to influence disease processes in several other areas of the body.  Treating periodontal disease successfully has been a challenge for many oral health care providers and successfully treating periodontal disease involves the understanding of how and why the disease progresses but also how to develop a customized strategy for each patient that aims to control and eradicate the disease.  This course provides information to assist clinicians in promoting the goals of oral health.  This course examines the latest evidence-based information related to periodontal health, levels of disease states, treatment strategies and patient care protocols.  Through this course, the clinician will gain an understanding of periodontal health and have the ability to recognize levels of disease states.  The course will educate on treatment strategies to combat the disease process. This course will review basic periodontal anatomy and physiology, periodontal disease classifications, treatment protocols, challenges of treatments and proper insurance coding and billing practices. Implementation of periodontal therapeutic strategies are best accomplished through a review of the scientific evidence on the topic.
